The President of India, Shri Ram Nath Kovind presented five Padma Bhushan and thirty-eight Padma Shri Awards today (April 2, 2018) at a Civil Investiture Ceremony held at Rashtrapati Bhavan.
Among the dignitaries present on the occasion were the Vice President of India, Prime Minister, Speaker Lok Sabha and Union Ministers.
The President of India, Shri Ram Nath Kovind, received a copy of a special issue of the ‘Think India’ journal, devoted to the late philosopher-politician Deendayal Upadhyay, at Rashtrapati Bhavan today (April 2, 2018). The copy was given to the President by Dr. Murli Manohar Joshi, MP, in the presence of Shri D P Tripathi, MP, and editor of the special issue. Among others, Dr. Shashi Tharoor, MP, and Shri Pawan Verma, former MP, were also present.
The New Chief Minister of Meghalaya, Shri Conrad Sangma called on the Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) of the Ministry of Development of North-Eastern Region (DoNER), MoS PMO, Personnel, Public Grievances & Pensions, Atomic Energy & Space, Dr Jitendra Singh here today and discussed with him a wide range of development projects and schemes in the State.
Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion (DIPP) has taken the multipronged approach to increase disposal of patent applications. The pendency of patent applications at examination stage has come down from 2.04 lakh as on 31st March 2017 to 1.72 lakh as on 28th of February this year. This information was given by the Minister of State of Commerce and Industry, C R Chaudhary, in a written reply in the Lok Sabha today. He said that 6235 applications were examined in February 2018 as against 3925 during the corresponding period during last year. Patent offices have been established in Delhi, Chennai, Kolkata and Mumbai and necessary physical and IT infrastructure is established in all the patent offices.
In exercise of the powers conferred by section 247 read with sections 458, 459 and 469 of the Companies Act, 2013 (18 of 2013), the Central Government, vide Gazette Notification dated 18th October 2017, published the Companies (Registered Valuers and Valuation) Rules, 2017 (hereafter ‘Rules’).
National Culture Fund (NCF) set up as a Trust under the Charitable Endowment Act, 1890 on 28th November, 1996 by the Government, with a view to mobilizing extra resources through Public-Private Partnerships has successfully completed 34 projects since inception, thus, promoting, protecting and preserving India’s cultural heritage.
As many as 6 monuments/historical sites in the North Eastern states have been identified tentatively for listing under World Heritage Site.
Details of monuments/sites identified/placed under tentative list for listing under world heritage in the northeastern states are given below:
- Apatani Cultural Landscape, Arunachal Pradesh
- Iconic Saree Weaving Clusters of India
- Moidams – the Mound – Burial System of the Ahom Dynasty, Assam
- Namdapha National Park, Arunachal Pradesh
- River Island of Majuli in midstream of Brahmaputra River in Assam
- Thembang Fortified Village, Arunachal Pradesh
A total of 83 monuments/sites of the North-Eastern States are centrally protected under the Archaeological Survey of India.

At the end of Financial Year 2017-18, 97.05 lakh subscribers have enrolled under Atal Pension Yojana. The incremental addition of 48.21 lakh subscribers was a 98% more than previous Financial Year 2016-17 figure of 48.83 lakhs. The dropout rate of girls at primary level is steadily decreasing
Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalayas (KGBVs) are residential schools at the upper primary level for girls belonging to disadvantaged groups such as SC, ST, OBC, Minority, and BPL. It aims to reduce gender gap in elementary education and is operational in Educationally Backward Blocks (EBBs). In KGBVs, 75% girls from SC, ST, OBC or Minority Communities would be accorded priority for enrollment and only thereafter, 25% girls from families of Below Poverty Line would be enrolled.
The University Grants Commission (UGC) had set up a Task Force under the Chairmanship of Prof. Meenakshi Gopinath, Ex-Member, UGC to review the existing arrangements for the safety and security of girls and women in particular and of the entire youth in general on campuses of institutions of higher learning. The Task Force submitted its report titled as “SAKSHAM- Measures for Ensuring the Safety of Women and Programmes for Gender Sensitization on Campuses” to the UGC on 30th October, 2013. The Ministry of Human Resource Development has launched the Rashtriya Avishkar Abhiyan (RAA), a convergent framework across School Education and Higher Education aiming to encourage children towards learning Science and Mathematics and to develop their interest through activities related to Science and Mathematics. One of the interventions under RAA is strengthening of school Science and Mathematics laboratories, through the Rashtriya Madhyamik Shiksha Abhiyan (RMSA). Further, under RMSA, important interventions i.e. Science Fair/Exhibition and Talent Search at the district level; mathematics and science kits to schools, visit to higher institutions of students and learning enhancement of students have been approved.
India’s fastest train Gatimaan Express has been extended up to Bundelkhand Region w.e.f 1st April 2018. It has been notified that the Train no 12049/50 Nizammuddin-Agra Cantt Gatimaan Exp. has been extended up to Gwalior/Jhansi for facilitating passengers. The extension of this prestigious premium train will facilitate movement of tourists to various tourist attractions in and around Gwalior and Jhansi of Bundelkhand region. It will boost the tourism in the region.
Ministry of Tourism in close collaboration with Ministry of Culture and Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) launched “Adopt a Heritage Project” to provide world-class tourist facilities at the various natural/cultural heritage sites, monuments and other tourist sites to make them tourist friendly, enhance their tourist potential and cultural importance in a planned and phased manner across the country.
Ministry of Tribal Affairs provides recurring grants under the Scheme of VTC for running Vocational Training Centres(VTCs) by the State Governments / NGOs. The scheme is implemented through the State Government. However, as a part of the rationalization of schemes of the Ministry, it has been decided to subsume the intervention of Vocational Training Centres under the Schemes of ‘Special Central Assistance to Tribal Sub-Scheme (SCA to TSS) and Grants under Article 275(1) of the Constitution from 2018-19 onwards. Receipt of proposals from State Governments for skill development / vocational training initiatives under these schemes is a continuous process. The proposal received from the State Government is appraised and approved by the Project Appraisal Committee (PAC) in the Ministry for funding.
